Get to know cloud storage

Understand buckets, objects, and access settings before you upload your first file.

Start with objects and buckets

Object storage keeps data as individual objects. Each object contains file data and metadata, identified by a key. Providers commonly organize objects into containers called buckets.

A key such as images/cloud.png looks like a folder path, but it is an object name. Tools often display these prefixes as folders for convenience.

Plan a simple structure

For a small project, use descriptive names and consistent prefixes. Keep public website assets separate from private documents.

  images/logo.svg
  documents/welcome.pdf

Before uploading, consider file sizes, how often files will be downloaded, and whether you need versioning or a backup copy.

Set access intentionally

Start with private access. Grant only the permissions needed for your application or users. A public image and a personal backup have very different access requirements.

  1. Create a private bucket or container.
  2. Upload a small, non-sensitive sample file.
  3. Inspect its name, size, and content type.
  4. Decide who needs read or write access.
  5. Remove the sample when you finish.
Check before sharing

If a file should be private, verify that its direct address cannot be opened in a signed-out browser. Also review storage and download charges with your provider.
